Rules for Stackers

SPORT STACKING JUST GOT FASTER!

Three rule changes as of April 10, 2010.

The World Sport Stacking Association (WSSA) is excited to announce three rule changes to sport stacking that become effective at the 2010 WSSA World Sport Stacking Championships on April 10th & 11th. The rule changes will significantly reduce the need for video review at all levels of competition and pave the way for even faster times.

"More and more stackers around the world are getting so fast, the human eye simply can't see what their hands are doing. These changes will allow stackers the freedom to go faster without worrying about unintended scratches, and allow judges to make confident decisions on the spot based on what they can realistically see. It all adds up to a very exciting step forward for sport stacking!"
- Bob Fox, WSSA Executive Director

The WSSA Rules Committee identified three specific areas that often can't be seen by judges, and upon video review, result in the vast majority of disqualifications. Below is a summary:

Rule Change #1
Down stacking two stacks at the same time: 3-3-3, 3-6-3, Cycle Two stacks may be down stacked at the same time. *All stackers must use both hands to begin down stacking the first stack in any sequence before beginning to down stack the second stack, and must use both hands to begin down stacking the second stack before beginning to down stack the third stack. The third stack may be down stacked with one hand. (Note: The rule still applies that in the up stacking phase, a stacker's hands cannot be on two stacks at the same time, nor can a stacker simultaneously "up stack" one stack while "down stacking" another.) *Note: This portion of the new rule rewritten for better clarification.

Rule Change #2
Hands on cups while stopping the timer: 3-3-3, 3-6-3, Cycle A stacker's hands may be in contact with the cups while stopping the Timer as long as the stacker does not hold (or appear to hold) any cups.

Rule Change #3
Turn and tap: Cycle The "turn and tap" portion of the Cycle Stack is no longer required. In the 1-10-1 phase of the Cycle Stack, once a stacker has placed the single cups-one up, one down-on each side of the nested column of 10, and then up stacked those 10, the single cups may simply be “picked up” and used to down stack the 10 into a 3-6-3. (If a stacker does “turn and tap,” there will be no penalty.)

Tips & Tricks For Faster Sport Stacking

If you are just beginning sport stacking, start on the floor with your Speed Stacks placed directly in front of you.

Always keep stacks close together to create a solid base for your pyramid. In fact, let your cups touch in your pyramid.

Use a light touch; don't be heavy-handed. Lift with a light grip. Try not to squeeze the cup; let gravity do the work.

If you lead with your right hand (if it feels best to use your right hand first) that hand should pick up the top cup.

Alternate your lead hand. Practice leading with one hand and then the other. Switch to increase ambidexterity.

When handling the cups, your hands should be positioned on the sides of the cups, never over the tops of the cups.

Separate the cups from one another using your fingers, resting the last (or bottom) cup on your pinky finger.

Stack in a circle - that means, use a circular motion with your hands and arms instead of back and forth.

Never pass a cup from one hand to another. Use both hands at the same time.

What the judges will look for

  1. Prior to approaching your competition table you, the Stacker, will be warming up at the “On Deck” table. At this point you are committed to “compete” at that competition table and cannot choose to leave and compete later.
  2. Hand to the judge your preprinted Individual Prelim Time Sheet (blue). The judge will confirm your information.
  3. There are two (2) warm ups allowed prior to each competition stack (3-3-3, 3-6-3 and Cycle) however you may choose to do only one or none at all. Warm ups for each competition stack must be done before the first actual timed try and may not be done in-between subsequent tries of that same stack. Prelims must be done in the following order: 3-3-3, 3-6-3, then Cycle.
  4. The judge will say “Reset Timer and Start When Ready”. You place your hands on the touch pads of the StackMat® and may begin your attempt any time after the green light on the StackMat® comes on. (Note: If a “hiccup” occurs the Judge will allow you to go again. A hiccup is an accidental starting and stopping of the timer.
  5. The judge will be looking for infractions that constitute a scratch. They use the following scratch codes:
    • S1) Improper starting and stopping hand positions on the Stack Mat. Contact must be below the wrist; Stopping with one hand already on the timer ok; A stacker's hands may be in contact with the cups while stopping the Timer as long as the stacker does not hold (or appear to hold) any cups.
    • S2) Cups must be stacked on the surface of the StackMat
    • S3) Stacking Sequence: work from left to right or right to left but down stacking must follow the same sequence as up stacking.
    • S4) Fumbles not corrected properly
    • S5) Hands on two sets of cups. NEW RULE: Two stacks may be down stacked at the same time. *All stackers must use both hands to begin down stacking the first stack in any sequence before beginning to down stack the second stack, and must use both hands to begin down stacking the second stack before beginning to down stack the third stack. The third stack may be down stacked with one hand. (Note: The rule still applies that in the up stacking phase, a stacker's hands cannot be on two stacks at the same time, nor can a stacker simultaneously "up stack" one stack while "down stacking" another.)
      In Cycle stack transitions:
      • a) from the 3-6-3 to the 6-6, hands may be on the two 3’s at the same time, however the up stack of the first six cannot be attempted until the down stack of the last three has been completed. (Note: A Stacker may re-position the first 3 by sliding the cups along the StackMat’s surface but the entire lip of the bottom cup must be in contact with the StackMat’s surface during this transition. After the last 3 have been down stacked a Stacker may begin up stacking the 6-6.)
      • b) from the 6-6 to the 1-10-1, once an attempt has been made to down stack the first 6, the second 6 may be down stacked. (NOTE: All 12 cups must be involved in the down stack (leaving none behind) and come together in either a) one down stacked column of 12 or b) when forming this down stacked column one or two of the 12 cups may remain behind in the stackers hand(s) before proceeding into the 1-10-1.)
  6. Times will be recorded to 1/100 of a second (e.g. 5.43 seconds)
  7. Your best time will be recorded on the Individual Prelim Time Sheet
  8. Complete the “My Best Times” sheet (yellow) provided by the Stacker.
