Luke and Zach Ao Dioko, and Caroline and Macky Aquino from Macau Anglican College were joined by Courtney Lun of The International School to form a relay team at the championships. Beaten out at the quarter-finals by Team Canada, this group of students performed remarkably well considering Sport Stacking was only introduced to Macau in November 2009. The team had only 2 weeks to practice as a group, a far cry from the well-developed teams from Canada, Germany, USA, and Australia who have had teams for years.
Brothers Luke and Zachary grabbed the fourth place medal for the doubles event; one being naturally left-handed and the other right-handed may have offered a competitive advantage. WSSA Macau representative, Jennifer Camulli reminded us that “all of these kids have already developed world-class skill. During the two weeks prior to the championships the team followed a prescribed practice regime; each one improving their skill and time by at least 20%. This is encouraging because it indicates that with more time to really master this skill, Macau can develop more stackers to successfully compete at an international level.”

Jeanie Fung, from Hong Kong, joined Team Macau as a doubles partner for Courtney Lun. She is the first member of the Hong Kong Sport Stacking club to attend the world championships. Jeanie also competed on a mixed international team for the relay events. She managed a 10th place finish in the individual 3-6-3 stack.
Sport Stacking is a fully inclusive sport: all ages can compete, including a masters division up to age 80 and a Special Stacker division for competitors with physical or mental disabilities. “We have been very active with the Macau Special Olympics members. Their participation at the recent Macau Sport Stacking tournament was well received by the community. It would be an honour to take a Special Stacker team to the world championships next year. For now, we are delighted with the performance of the team this year. It was beyond our expectations.” The organisation’s focus will now be on sharing more of this sport with the Macau community and planning for the first Asian Sport Stacking Championships, possibly to take place in the Philippines.
